John and Jacob [★★★★], an impressive songwriting duo, opened the show. They co-wrote The Band Perry’s hit “Done” and performed the song with the crowd singing along. Next they played a very soft sentimental song, “I’d Go Back,” which really won the crowd over. John and Jacob also played “Be My Girl” which was featured on ABC’s hit show Nashville. It’s obvious this duo are great songwriters with an impressive resume and a bright future.

As Kacey Musgraves [★★★★took the stage she was not impressed with the sitting crowd, so she had everyone stand because her show “isn’t the sitting kind” as she went into her hit, “Blowin’ Smoke.” She told us how she is a “real big Dolly fan” and covered her song “Here You Come Again.” Kacey was full of funny lines and stories all night as she broke into Miranda Lambert’s “Mama’s Broken Heart,” which Kacey wrote the lyricists for. She played one final cover of TLC’s “No Scrubs.”

Like her opening act Kacey has a very impressive resume as she went on to mention her next song, “Step Off” which she performed with Katy Perry on the CMT Crossroads series. For her final song she played her first hit “Merry Go Round” which was a crowd favorite as they sang along about “Mary Jane” with their cell phones and lighters high in the air.

A few moments later the crowd roared for an encore, and when Kacey came back out she said how she has been in studio and is really excited for the new songs and she played acoustic renditions of two of them. The first was called “Biscuits” and had very amusing lyrics, “Mind your own biscuits and life will give you gravy.” The next new song was called “Cup of Tea.” Kacey said, “I think it’s genuinely cool when people can be themselves, and that’s where this song came from.“ She invited the band back out and they raised the energy as they covered Nancy Sinatra’s “These Boots are Made for Walkin’.” It’s too bad this Kacey didn’t display this level of energy from the beginning of her set! For her final song Kacey played “Follow Your Arrow.”

We got to see both John and Jacob and Kacey put on strong sets and play their versions of hits they composed for other artists. Overall both acts are great songwriters, but they could have displayed a little more energy on stage, and worked harder to engage the crowd.
